What Are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to develop, typically emerging in the late teens or early twenties. At Bay Oral & Facial Surgery, Dr. Scott Heitzmann evaluates the development and positioning of wisdom teeth to determine if they are healthy or if intervention is needed. These teeth are located at the very back of the mouth and often do not have enough space to fully emerge, which can lead to crowding, pain, infection, or damage to nearby teeth. In many cases, wisdom teeth need to be removed to prevent these complications and protect long-term oral health. How Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Wisdom tooth removal is a routine oral surgery procedure typically performed under local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia to ensure maximum comfort. During the procedure, Dr. Heitzmann makes a small incision in the gum tissue to expose the impacted or partially erupted tooth and may remove a small amount of surrounding bone if necessary. The tooth is then carefully extracted, sometimes in sections, to minimize trauma to the area. Once the tooth is removed, the site is cleaned and the gum tissue is sutured to promote healing. The entire procedure usually takes between 45 and 60 minutes, depending on the number and position of the teeth. Most patients experience mild swelling and discomfort afterward, with full recovery typically occurring within one to two weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I have all of my wisdom teeth removed at the same time?
Removing them all in one appointment can minimize downtime and reduce the need for repeated anesthesia. For many patients, this is the most practical option. Our team will review your imaging and recommend the safest, most efficient treatment plan.
How old does a teen have to be for wisdom teeth removal?
Most teens are ready when their wisdom teeth begin to develop enough for evaluation, often around ages 15–17. The right timing depends on root formation, positioning, and any symptoms that may be occurring. Our team will determine readiness through a thorough exam and X-rays.
What should I do for my child who is nervous about having their wisdom teeth removed?
Open conversations, reviewing expectations, and discussing sedation can ease fears. Many teens feel better once they understand the process and know they will be comfortable throughout. Our team is experienced in treating anxious patients and will help guide your child through every step.
